Light dimmer chokes

Summary

The WD range is based on more than twenty years experience of the suppression of phase-angle light dimmers, which has made Almag one of the World’s largest manufacturers of dimmer chokes. The range of rise-times and inductances for each current rating allows our WD chokes to cover all dimmer requirements, from EMC compliance right through to high rise-time TV and film studios. All types use powder toroidal cores for optimum high frequency suppression and low flux-leakage.

Current Ratings

All current ratings shown are dependant on the actual cooling conditions in the customer’s installation. The powder cores used have a “soft saturation” which means that they do not have the magnetically limited current ratings of laminated chokes. Current ratings are therefore determined mainly by thermal conditions.

Normal cooling
Current ratings are the maximum for efficient natural convection cooling. Reduction of the current by up to 30% to allow for less efficient cooling will have little effect on the rise-time.

Forced cooling
Current ratings allow for the 30-50% increase that can be gained where the chokes are fan-blown.

Inductance, Resistance & Rise-time

The inductance shown is the nominal value for low drive level, bridge measurement, typically at 1kHz. The resistance shown is for DC measurement at 25 degrees C. The rise-times shown are nominal, from 10% to 90% of the current waveform, at 90 degree firing angle.

Preferred Range

This preferred range is based on the most popular choke types and on the most widely used core sizes, and so offers the best combination of price and availability. Other types are available for applications not covered by this preferred range - please contact Almag, and we will be pleased to advise on the most suitable choke type.
